Microwave or Cancer Machine?

Is it possible that millions of people are ignorantly sacrificingtheir health in exchange for the convenience of microwave ovens? Why did the SovietUnion ban the use of microwave ovens in 1976? Who invented microwave ovens, and why?The answers to these questions may shock you into throwing your microwave oven inthe trash.

Over 90% of American homes have microwave ovens used for meal preparation. Becausemicrowave ovens are so convenient and energy efficient, as compared to conventionalovens, very few homes or restaurants are without them. In general, people believethat whatever a microwave oven does to foods cooked in it doesn't have any negativeeffect on either the food or them. Of course, if microwave ovens were really harmful,our government would never allow them on the market, would they? Would they? Regardlessof what has been "officially" released concerning microwave ovens, we have personallystopped using ours based on the research facts outlined in this article.

The purpose of this report is to show proof - evidence - that microwave cooking is notnatural, nor healthy, and is far more dangerous to the human body than anyone couldimagine. However, the microwave oven manufacturers, Washington City politics, and plainold human nature are suppressing the facts and evidence. Because of this, people arecontinuing to microwave their food - in blissful ignorance - without knowing the effectsand danger of doing so.

How do microwave ovens work?

Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic energy, like light wavesor radio waves, and occupy a part of the electromagnetic spectrum of power, or energy.Microwaves are very short waves of electromagnetic energy that travel at the speed oflight (186,282 miles per second). In our modern technological age, microwaves are usedto relay long distance telephone signals, television programs, and computer informationacross the earth or to a satellite in space. But the microwave is most familiar to usas an energy source for cooking food.

Every microwave oven contains a magnetron, a tube in which electrons are affected bymagnetic and electric fields in such a way as to produce micro wavelength radiation atabout 2450 Mega Hertz (MHz) or 2.45 Giga Hertz (GHz). This microwave radiation interactswith the molecules in food. All wave energy changes polarity from positive to negativewith each cycle of the wave. In microwaves, these polarity changes happen millions oftimes every second. Food molecules - especially the molecules of water - have a positiveand negative end in the same way a magnet has a north and a south polarity.

In commercial models, the oven has a power input of about 1000 watts of alternatingcurrent. As these microwaves generated from the magnetron bombard the food, they causethe polar molecules to rotate at the same frequency millions of times a second. Allthis agitation creates molecular friction, which heats up the food. The friction alsocauses substantial damage to the surrounding molecules, often tearing them apart orforcefully deforming them. The scientific name for this deformation is "structuralisomerism".

By comparison, microwaves from the sun are based on principles of pulsed direct current(DC) that don't create frictional heat; microwave ovens use alternating current (AC)creating frictional heat. A microwave oven produces a spiked wavelength of energy withall the power going into only one narrow frequency of the energy spectrum. Energy fromthe sun operates in a wide frequency spectrum.

Many terms are used in describing electromagnetic waves, such as wavelength, amplitude,cycle and frequency:

Wavelength determines the type of radiation, i.e. radio, X-ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, etc.
Amplitude determines the extent of movement measured from the starting point.
Cycle determines the unit of frequency, such as cycles per second, Hertz, Hz, or cycles/second.
Frequency determines the number of occurrences within a given time period (usually 1 second); The number of occurrences of a recurring process per unit of time, i.e. the number of repetitions of cycles per second.
Radiation = spreading energy with electromagnetic waves

Radiation, as defined by physics terminology, is "the electromagneticwaves emitted by the atoms and molecules of a radioactive substance as a result of nucleardecay." Radiation causes ionization, which is what occurs when a neutral atom gains orloses electrons. In simpler terms, a microwave oven decays and changes the molecular structureof the food by the process of radiation. Had the manufacturers accurately called them"radiation ovens", it's doubtful they would have ever sold one, but that's exactly whata microwave oven is.

We've all been told that microwaving food is not the same as irradiating it (radiation"treatment"). The two processes are supposed to use completely different waves of energy andat different intensities. No FDA or officially released government studies have proven currentmicrowaving usage to be harmful, but we all know that the validity of studies can be - and aresometimes deliberately - limiting. Many of these studies are later proven to be inaccurate. Asconsumers, we're supposed to have a certain degree of common sense to use in judgment.

Take the example of eggs and how they were "proven" to be so harmful to our health in the late1960's. This brought about imitation egg products and big profits for the manufacturers, whileegg farms went broke. Now, recent government sponsored studies are saying that eggs are not badfor us after all. So, whom should we believe and what criteria should we use to decide mattersconcerning our health? Since it's currently published that microwaves - purportedly - don't leakinto the environment, when properly used and with approved design, the decision lies with eachconsumer as to whether or not you choose to eat food heated by a microwave oven or even purchaseone in the first place.

Motherly instincts are right

On a more humorous side, the "sixth sense" every mother has is impossibleto argue with. Have you ever tried it? Children will never win against a mother's intuition.It's like trying to argue with the arm - appearing out of nowhere - that pinned you to theback of the seat when your mother slammed on the brakes.

Many of us come from a generation where mothers and grandmothers have distrusted the modern"inside out" cooking they claimed was "not suitable" for most foods. My mother refused to eventry baking anything in a microwave. She also didn't like the way a cup of coffee tasted whenheated in a microwave oven. I have to fully agree and can't argue either fact. Her own commonsense and instincts told her that there was no way microwave cooking could be natural nor makefoods "taste they way they're supposed to". Reluctantly, even my mother succumbed to re-heatingleftovers in a microwave due to her work schedule before she retired.

Many others feel the same way, but they're considered an "old fashioned" minority dating backto before the 1970's when microwaves first overwhelmed the market. Like most young adults atthe time, as microwave ovens became commonplace, I chose to ignore my mother's intuitive wisdomand joined the majority who believed microwave cooking was far too convenient to ever believeanything could be wrong with it. Chalk one up for mom's perception, because even though shedidn't know the scientific, technical, or health reasons why, she just knew that microwaveovens were not good based on how foods tasted when they were cooked in them. She didn't likethe way the texture of the microwaved food changed either.

Microwaves unsafe for baby's milk

A number of warnings have been made public, but have been barelynoticed. For example, Young Families, the Minnesota Extension Service of the Universityof Minnesota, published the following in 1989:

"Although microwaves heat food quickly, they are not recommended for heating a baby'sbottle. The bottle may seem cool to the touch, but the liquid inside may become extremelyhot and could burn the baby's mouth and throat. Also, the buildup of steam in a closedcontainer, such as a baby bottle, could cause it to explode. Heating the bottle in amicrowave can cause slight changes in the milk. In infant formulas, there may be aloss of some vitamins. In expressed breast milk, some protective properties may bedestroyed. Warming a bottle by holding it under tap water, or by setting it in abowl of warm water, then testing it on your wrist before feeding may take a fewminutes longer, but it is much safer."

Dr. Lita Lee of Hawaii reported in the December 9, 1989 Lancet:

"Microwaving baby formulas converted certain trans-amino acids into their synthetic cis-isomers.Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans-fatty acids, are not biologically active.Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is known tobe neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys).It's bad enough that many babies are not nursed, but now they are given fake milk (babyformula) made even more toxic via microwaving."

Microwaved blood kills patient

In 1991, there was a lawsuit in Oklahoma concerning the hospitaluse of a microwave oven to warm blood needed in a transfusion. The case involved a hipsurgery patient, Norma Levitt, who died from a simple blood transfusion. It seems thenurse had warmed the blood in a microwave oven. This tragedy makes it very apparentthat there's much more to "heating" with microwaves than we've been led to believe.Blood for transfusions is routinely warmed, but not in microwave ovens. In the caseof Mrs. Levitt, the microwaving altered the blood and it killed her.

It's very obvious that this form of microwave radiation "heating" does something to thesubstances it heats. It's also becoming quite apparent that people who process food in amicrowave oven are also ingesting these "unknowns".

Because the body is electrochemical in nature, any force that disrupts or changes humanelectrochemical events will affect the physiology of the body. This is further describedin Robert O. Becker's book, The Body Electric, and in Ellen Sugarman's book, Warning,the Electricity Around You May Be Hazardous to Your Health.

Scientific evidence and facts

In Comparative Study of Food Prepared Conventionally and in theMicrowave Oven, published by Raum & Zelt in 1992, at 3(2): 43, it states

"A basic hypothesis of natural medicine states that the introduction into the human body of molecules and energies, to which it is not accustomed, is much more likely to cause harm than good. Microwaved food contains both molecules and energies not present in food cooked in the way humans have been cooking food since the discovery of fire. Microwave energy from the sun and other stars is direct current based. Artificially produced microwaves, including those in ovens, are produced from alternating current and force a billion or more polarity reversals per second in every food molecule they hit. Production of unnatural molecules is inevitable. Naturally occurring amino acids have been observed to undergo isomeric changes (changes in shape morphing) as well as transformation into toxic forms, under the impact of microwaves produced in ovens. One short-term study found significant and disturbing changes in the blood of individuals consuming microwaved milk and vegetables. Eight volunteers ate various combinations of the same foods cooked different ways. All foods that were processed through the microwave ovens caused changes in the blood of the volunteers. Hemoglobin levels decreased and over all white cell levels and cholesterol levels increased. Lymphocytes decreased. Luminescent (light-emitting) bacteria were employed to detect energetic changes in the blood. Significant increases were found in the luminescence of these bacteria when exposed to blood serum obtained after the consumption of microwaved food."

The Swiss clinical study

Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel, who is now retired, worked as a food scientistfor many years with one of the major Swiss food companies that do business on a global scale.A few years ago, he was fired from his job for questioning certain processing procedures thatdenatured the food.

In 1991, he and a Lausanne University professor published a research paper indicating thatfood cooked in microwave ovens could pose a greater risk to health than food cooked byconventional means. An article also appeared in issue 19 of the Journal Franz Weber inwhich it was stated that the consumption of food cooked in microwave ovens had cancerouseffects on the blood. The research paper itself followed the article. On the cover of themagazine there was a picture of the Grim Reaper holding a microwave oven in one of hishands.

Dr. Hertel was the first scientist to conceive and carry out a quality clinical study onthe effects microwaved nutrients have on the blood and physiology of the human body. Hissmall but well controlled study showed the degenerative force produced in microwave ovensand the food processed in them. The scientific conclusion showed that microwave cookingchanged the nutrients in the food; and, changes took place in the participants' blood thatcould cause deterioration in the human system. Hertel's scientific study was done alongwith Dr. Bernard H. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the UniversityInstitute for Biochemistry.

In intervals of two to five days, the volunteers in the study received one of the followingfood variants on an empty stomach:

Raw milk;
The same milk conventionally cooked;
Pasteurized milk;
The same raw milks cooked in a microwave oven;
Raw vegetables from an organic farm; (6) the same vegetables cooked conventionally;
The same vegetables frozen and defrosted in a microwave oven; and
The same vegetables cooked in the microwave oven.

Once the volunteers were isolated, blood samples were taken fromevery volunteer immediately before eating. Then, blood samples were taken at definedintervals after eating from the above milk or vegetable preparations.

Significant changes were discovered in the blood samples from the intervals followingthe foods cooked in the microwave oven. These changes included a decrease in allhemoglobin and cholesterol values, especially the ratio of HDL (good cholesterol)and LDL (bad cholesterol) values. Lymphocytes (white blood cells) showed a more distinctshort-term decrease following the intake of microwaved food than after the intake of allthe other variants. Each of these indicators pointed to degeneration. Additionally, therewas a highly significant association between the amount of microwave energy in the testfoods and the luminous power of luminescent bacteria exposed to serum from test personswho ate that food. This led Dr. Hertel to the conclusion that such technically derivedenergies may, indeed, be passed along to man inductively via eating microwaved food.

According to Dr. Hertel, "Leukocytosis, which cannot be accounted for by normaldaily deviations, is taken very seriously by hemotologists. Leukocytes are oftensigns of pathogenic effects on the living system, such as poisoning and cell damage.The increase of leukocytes with the microwaved foods were more pronounced than withall the other variants. It appears that these marked increases were caused entirelyby ingesting the microwaved substances.This process is based on physical principles and has already been confirmed in theliterature. The apparent additional energy exhibited by the luminescent bacteria wasmerely an extra confirmation. There is extensive scientific literature concerningthe hazardous effects of direct microwave radiation on living systems. It isastonishing, therefore, to realize how little effort has been taken to replacethis detrimental technique of microwaves with technology more in accordance withnature. Technically produced microwaves are based on the principle of alternatingcurrent. Atoms, molecules, and cells hit by this hard electromagnetic radiationare forced to reverse polarity 1-100 billion times a second. There are no atoms,molecules or cells of any organic system able to withstand such a violent, destructivepower for any extended period of time, not even in the low energy range of milliwatts.Of all the natural substances - which are polar - the oxygen of water moleculesreacts most sensitively. This is how microwave cooking heat is generated - frictionfrom this violence in water molecules. Structures of molecules are torn apart,molecules are forcefully deformed, called structural isomerism, and thus becomeimpaired in quality. This is contrary to conventional heating of food where heattransfers convectionally from without to within. Cooking by microwaves begins withinthe cells and molecules where water is present and where the energy is transformedinto frictional heat.In addition to the violent frictional heat effects, called thermic effects, thereare also athermic effects which have hardly ever been taken into account. Theseathermic effects are not presently measurable, but they can also deform the structuresof molecules and have qualitative consequences. For example the weakening of cellmembranes by microwaves is used in the field of gene altering technology. Because ofthe force involved, the cells are actually broken, thereby neutralizing the electricalpotentials, the very life of the cells, between the outer and inner side of the cellmembranes. Impaired cells become easy prey for viruses, fungi and other microorganisms.The natural repair mechanisms are suppressed and cells are forced to adapt to a state ofenergy emergency - they switch from aerobic to anaerobic respiration. Instead of waterand carbon dioxide, the cell poisons hydrogen peroxide and carbon monoxide are produced."The same violent deformations that occur in our bodies, when we are directly exposed toradar or microwaves, also occur in the molecules of foods cooked in a microwave oven.This radiation results in the destruction and deformation of food molecules. Microwavingalso creates new compounds, called radiolytic compounds, which are unknown fusions notfound in nature. Radiolytic compounds are created by molecular decomposition - decay -as a direct result of radiation.Microwave oven manufacturers insist that microwaved and irradiated foods do not have anysignificantly higher radiolytic compounds than do broiled, baked or other conventionallycooked foods. The scientific clinical evidence presented here has shown that this issimply a lie. In America, neither universities nor the federal government have conductedany tests concerning the effects on our bodies from eating microwaved foods. Isn't thata bit odd? They're more concerned with studies on what happens if the door on a microwaveoven doesn't close properly. Once again, common sense tells us that their attentionshould be centered on what happens to food cooked inside a microwave oven. Since peopleingest this altered food, shouldn't there be concern for how the same decayed moleculeswill affect our own human biological cell structure? Industry's action to hide thetruth.

As soon as Doctors Hertel and Blanc published their results, the authorities reacted.A powerful trade organization, the Swiss Association of Dealers for Electro-apparatusesfor Households and Industry, known as FEA, struck swiftly in 1992. They forced thePresident of the Court of Seftigen, Canton of Bern, to issue a "gag order" against Drs.Hertel and Blanc. In March 1993, Dr. Hertel was convicted for "interfering with commerce"and prohibited from further publishing his results. However, Dr. Hertel stood his groundand fought this decision over the years.

Not long ago, this decision was reversed in a judgment delivered in Strasbourg, Austria,on August 25, 1998. The European Court of Human Rights held that there had been aviolation of Hertel's rights in the 1993 decision. The European Court of Human Rightsalso ruled that the "gag order" issued by the Swiss court in 1992 against Dr. Hertel,prohibiting him from declaring that microwave ovens are dangerous to human health, wascontrary to the right to freedom of expression. In addition, Switzerland was ordered topay Dr. Hertel compensation.

Who invented microwave ovens?

The Nazis, for use in their mobile support operations, originallydeveloped microwave "radiomissor" cooking ovens to be used for the invasion of Russia.By being able to utilize electronic equipment for preparation of meals on a mass scale,the logistical problem of cooking fuels would have been eliminated, as well as theconvenience of producing edible products in a greatly reduced time-factor.

After the war, the Allies discovered medical research done by the Germans on microwaveovens. These documents, along with some working microwave ovens, were transferred to theUnited States War Department and classified for reference and "further scientificinvestigation." The Russians had also retrieved some microwave ovens and now havethorough research on their biological effects. As a result, their use was outlawedin the Soviet Union. The Soviets issued an international warning on the health hazards,both biological and environmental, of microwave ovens and similar frequency electronicdevices.

Other Eastern European scientists also reported the harmful effects of microwaveradiation and set up strict environmental limits for their usage. The United Stateshas not accepted the European reports of harmful effects, even though the EPA estimatesthat radio frequency and microwave radiation sources in America are increasing at 15%per year.

Carcinogens in microwaved food

In Dr. Lita Lee's book, Health Effects of Microwave Radiation - MicrowaveOvens, and in the March and September 1991 issues of Earthletter, she stated that everymicrowave oven leaks electro-magnetic radiation, harms food, and converts substances cookedin it to dangerous organ-toxic and carcinogenic products. Further research summarized inthis article reveal that microwave ovens are far more harmful than previously imagined.

The following is a summary of the Russian investigations published by the Atlantis RaisingEducational Center in Portland, Oregon. Carcinogens were formed in virtually all foods tested.No test food was subjected to more microwaving than necessary to accomplish the purpose, i.e.,cooking, thawing, or heating to insure sanitary ingestion.

Here's a summary of some of the results:

Microwaving prepared meats sufficiently to insure sanitary ingestion caused formation of d-Nitrosodienthanolamines, a well-known carcinogen.
Microwaving milk and cereal grains converted some of their amino acids into carcinogens.
Thawing frozen fruits converted their glucoside and galactoside containing fractions into carcinogenic substances.
Extremely short exposure of raw, cooked or frozen vegetables converted their plant alkaloids into carcinogens.
Carcinogenic free radicals were formed in microwaved plants, especially root vegetables.
Decrease in nutritional value

Russian researchers also reported a marked acceleration of structuraldegradation leading to a decreased food value of 60 to 90% in all foods tested. Amongthe changes observed were:

Deceased bio-availability of vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotropics factors in all food tested.
Various kinds of damaged to many plant substances, such as alkaloids, glucosides, galactosides and nitrilosides.
The degradation of nucleo-proteins in meats.

Microwave sickness is discovered

The Russians did research on thousands of workers who had beenexposed to microwaves during the development of radar in the 1950's. Their researchshowed health problems so serious that the Russians set strict limits of 10 microwattsexposure for workers and one microwatt for civilians.

In Robert O. Becker's book, The Body Electric, he described Russian research on thehealth effects of microwave radiation, which they called "microwave sickness." On page314, Becker states:

"It's [Microwave sickness] first signs are low blood pressure and slow pulse. The later and most common manifestations are chronic excitation of the sympathetic nervous system [stress syndrome] and high blood pressure. This phase also often includes headache, dizziness, eye pain, sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, stomach pain, nervous tension, inability to concentrate, hair loss, plus an increased incidence of appendicitis, cataracts, reproductive problems, and cancer. The chronic symptoms are eventually succeeded by crisis of adrenal exhaustion and ischemic heart disease [the blockage of coronary arteries and heart attacks]."

According to Dr. Lee, changes are observed in the blood chemistriesand the rates of certain diseases among consumers of microwaved foods. The symptomsabove can easily be caused by the observations shown below. The following is a sampleof these changes:

Lymphatic disorders were observed, leading to decreased ability to prevent certain types of cancers. An increased rate of cancer cell formation was observed in the blood. Increased rates of stomach and intestinal cancers were observed. Higher rates of digestive disorders and a gradual breakdown of the systems of elimination were observed.

Microwave research conclusions

The following were the most significant German and Russian researchoperations facilities concerning the biological effects of microwaves:

The initial research conducted by the Germans during the Barbarossa military campaign, at the Humbolt-Universitat zu Berlin (1942-1943); and,
From 1957 and up to the present [until the end of the cold war], the Russian research operations were conducted at: the Institute of Radio Technology at Kinsk,
Byelorussian Autonomous Region; and, at the Institute of Radio Technology at Rajasthan in the Rossiskaja Autonomous Region, both in the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.

In most cases, the foods used for research analysis were exposedto microwave propagation at an energy potential of 100 kilowatts/cm3/second, to thepoint considered acceptable for sanitary, normal ingestion. The effects noted by bothGerman and Russian researchers is presented in three categories:

Category I, Cancer-Causing Effects
Category II, Nutritive Destruction of Foods
Category III, Biological Effects of Exposure

CATEGORY I

CANCER-CAUSING EFFECTS

Creation of a "binding effect" to radioactivity in the atmosphere, thus causing a marked increase in the amount of alpha and beta particle saturation in foods;
Creation of cancer causing agents within protein hydrolysate compounds* in milk and cereal grains [*these are natural proteins that are split into unnatural fragments by the addition of water];
Alteration of elemental food-substances, causing disorders in the digestive system by unstable catabolism* of foods subjected to microwaves [*the metabolic breakdown process];
Due to chemical alterations within food substances, malfunctions were observed within the lymphatic systems [absorbent vessels], causing a degeneration of the immune potentials of the body to protect against certain forms of neoplastics [abnormal growths of tissue];
Ingestion of microwaved foods caused a higher percentage of cancerous cells within the blood serum [cytomas - cell tumors such as sarcoma];
Microwave emissions caused alteration in the catabolic [metabolic breakdown] behavior of glucoside [hydrolyzed dextrose] and galactoside [oxidized alcohol] elements within frozen fruits when thawed in this manner;
Microwave emission caused alteration of the catabolic [metabolic breakdown] behavior of plant alkaloids [organic nitrogen based elements] when raw, cooked, or frozen vegetables were exposed for even extremely short durations;
Cancer causing free radicals [highly reactive incomplete molecules] were formed within certain trace mineral molecular formations in plant substances, and in particular, raw root-vegetables; and,
In a statistically high percentage of persons, microwaved foods caused stomach and intestinal cancerous growths, as well as a general degeneration of peripheral cellular tissues, with a gradual breakdown of the function of the digestive and excretive systems.

CATEGORY II

DECREASE IN FOOD VALUE

Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritive valueof all foods researched. The following are the most important findings:

A decrease in the bioavailability [capability of the body to utilize the nutriment] of B-complex vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotropics in all foods;
A loss of 60-90% of the vital energy field content of all tested foods;
A reduction in the metabolic behavior and integration process capability of alkaloids [organic nitrogen based elements], glucosides and galactosides, and nitrilosides;
A destruction of the nutritive value of nucleoproteins in meats;
A marked acceleration of structural disintegration in all foods.

CATEGORY III

BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE

Exposure to microwave emissions also had an unpredictably negativeeffect upon the general biological welfare of humans. This was not discovered until theRussians experimented with highly sophisticated equipment and discovered that a human didnot even need to ingest the material substance of the microwaved food substances: thateven exposure to the energy-field itself was sufficient to cause such adverse side effectsthat the use of any such microwave apparatus was forbidden in 1976 by Soviet state law.

The following are the enumerated effects:

A breakdown of the human "life-energy field" in those who were exposed to microwave ovens while in operation, with side-effects to the human energy field of increasingly longer duration;
A degeneration of the cellular voltage parallels during the process of using the apparatus, especially in the blood and lymphatic areas;
A degeneration and destabilization of the external energy activated potentials of food utilization within the processes of human metabolism;
A degeneration and destabilization of internal cellular membrane potentials while transferring catabolic [metabolic breakdown] processes into the blood serum from the digestive process;
Degeneration and circuit breakdowns of electrical nerve impulses within the junction potentials of the cerebrum [the front portion of the brain where thought and higher functions reside];
A degeneration and breakdown of nerve electrical circuits and loss of energy field symmetry in the neuroplexuses [nerve centers] both in the front and the rear of the central and autonomic nervous systems;
Loss of balance and circuiting of the bioelectric strengths within the ascending reticular activating system [the system which controls the function of consciousness];
A long term cumulative loss of vital energies within humans, animals and plants that were located within a 500-meter radius of the operational equipment;

Japan on brink of N-Catastrophe as 3rd reactor explodes in 3 days

TOKYO: A small crew of technicians braved radiation and fire through the day on Tuesday as they fought to prevent three nuclear reactors in northeastern Japan from melting down and stop storage ponds loaded with spent uranium fuel pods from bursting into flames.

Tokyo Electric Power Company officials announced on Tuesday evening that they would consider using helicopters in an attempt to douse with cold water a boiling rooftop storage pond for spent uranium fuel rods.

The rods are still radioactive and potentially as hot and dangerous as the fuel rods inside the reactors if not kept submerged in water.

"The only ideas we have right now are using a helicopter to spray water from above, or inject water from below," a power company official said.

"We believe action must be taken by tomorrow or the day after."Prime Minister Naoto Kan warned in a TV address Tuesday of rising radiation. "There is a risk of high radiation near the plant and citizens in 30-km radius should stay indoors."

Hydrogen gas bubbling up from chemical reactions set off by the hot fuel rods produced a powerful explosion on Tuesday that blew a 26-foot hole in the side of reactor No. 4 at the Fukushima Daiichi N-plant. A fire there may have been caused by machine oil in a nearby facility, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors said.

Concern remained high about the storage ponds at that reactor and at reactors 5 and 6. The reactors at the plant, near Tokyo, were not operating on Friday when an offshore 9.0 earthquake shook the site. A tsunami with waves up to 30 feet high rolled into the northeast coastline minutes later, swamping the plant.

"This is Japan's most severe crisis since the war ended 65 years ago," Prime Minister Naoto Kan told reporters, adding that Japan's future would be decided by the response to this crisis.
The death toll in Japan's earthquake and tsunami will likely exceed 10,000 in one state alone, an official said Sunday, as millions of survivors were left without drinking water, electricity and proper food along the pulverized northeastern coast.
Although the government doubled the number of soldiers deployed in the aid effort to 100,000, it seemed overwhelmed by what's turning out to be a triple disaster: Friday's quake and tsunami damaged two nuclear reactors at a power plant on the coast, and at least one of them appeared to be going through a partial meltdown, raising fears of a radiation leak.
The police chief of Miyagi prefecture, or state, told a gathering of disaster relief officials that his estimate for deaths was more than 10,000, police spokesman Go Sugawara told The Associated Press. Miyagi has a population of 2.3 million and is one of the three prefectures hardest hit in Friday's disaster. Only 379 people have officially been confirmed dead in Miyagi.
The nuclear crisis posed fresh concerns for those who survived the earthquake and tsunami, which hit with breathtaking force and speed, breaking or sweeping away everything in its path.
"First I was worried about the quake, now I'm worried about radiation. I live near the plants, so I came here to find out if I'm OK. I tested negative, but I don't know what to do next," Kenji Koshiba, a construction worker, said at an emergency center in Koriyama town near the power plant in Fukushima.
According to officials, more than 1,400 people were killed — including 200 people whose bodies were found Sunday along the coast — and more than 1,000 were missing in the disasters. Another 1,700 were injured.
In a rare piece of good news, the Defense Ministry said a military vessel on Sunday rescued a 60-year-old man floating off the coast of Fukushima on the roof of his house after being swept away in the tsunami. He was in good condition.
The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the initial quake to have a magnitude of 8.9, while Japanese officials raised their estimate on Sunday to 9.0. Either way it was the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan. It has been followed by more than 150 powerful aftershocks.
Teams searched for the missing along hundreds of miles (kilometers) of Japanese coastline, and hundreds of thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers that were cut off from rescuers and aid. At least 1.4 million households had gone without water since the quake struck and some 2.5 million households were without electricity.
Temperatures were to dip near freezing overnight, but the prime minister warned that electricity would not be restored for days.
Trade Minister Banri Kaeda said the region was likely to face further blackouts and that power would be rationed to ensure supplies go to essential needs.
The government says it has sent 120,000 blankets, 120,000 bottles of water and 110,000 liters of gasoline in addition to bread, rice balls, instant cup noodles and diapers to the affected areas.
Large areas of the countryside remained surrounded by water and unreachable. Fuel stations were closed and people were running out of gasoline for their vehicles.
The government said 275,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, many of them without power.

A breakthrough revelation on HIV AIDS by a new Harvard study suggests that there are proteins in the body that help some HIV positive people in not ending up with AIDS. This proves that not every HIV-infected person has AIDS.

The study published in the journal 'Nature' said, “A large-scale genetic analysis has suggested that tiny changes in the structure of a protein help the immune system to recognize and destroy infected cells.”

Bruce Walker and his contemporaries from the Harvard University in Charlestown initiated the study after determining the potential of these HIV controller proteins that can serve as a cure for AIDS.

"I realized that we could create a cohort by going directly to physicians around the world, and I thought we should figure out what is genetically unique about people who do well compared with people who do badly," said the lead investigator.

It may be noted that every 1 in 300 HIV positive people is saved from AIDS by the life-saving proteins which neutralize the effect of the virus and do not let it spread throughout the body.

Study details
For the present genome-wide association study or GWAS, the research team collected DNA samples of more than 900 such HIV controllers and around 2600 people having the average HIV infections.

The two were then compared genetically by the scientists. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variations were examined amongst the samples and not more than 300 HIV controlling sites were discovered.

Bruce Walker informed, "Out of the three billion nucleotides [that make up the human genome], we narrowed it down to a handful of amino acids that define the difference, each coded for by just three nucleotides.”

“All the sites identified are in a region of the genome that codes for proteins involved in immune response, called HLA proteins. We used regression analysis to narrow their search down to the four sites most strongly linked to HIV immunity,” said Walker.

The researchers highlighted amino acids in the protein HLA-B that differed between HIV controllers and those having normal HIV infections. They linked these specific amino acids with controlling HIV transforming into AIDS.

Video game on AIDS awareness launched
The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has unveiled a video game to spread AIDS awareness.

Titled ‘Fast Car: Traveling Safely around the World,’ the game is aimed at teenagers over 16 years of age and would be made available in English, French and Russian.

"The importance of the game consists in providing young people with information materials on HIV and AIDS that can be widely distributed through communication channels in order to help them to gain an accurate understanding of these issues and preventive practices," UNESCO spokesman said.

Salman Khan's acerbic comments on Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Guzaarish have stirred a hornet's nest. While Bhansali, stung by his one-time friend's words, has retired hurt, shutting himself off, Guzaarish hero Hrithik Roshan is fuming.

As reported by us on Thursday, Salman had at an awards function to felicitate the handicapped accused Bhansali of exploiting the physically challenged for his art, and trashed Guzaarish for its poor box office collections.

"If such an old and trusted friend can be so insensitive I don't want anything to do with the entertainment industry," Bhansali told us before begging off from commenting further on the matter.

But his lead actor Hrithik Roshan has been irked enough to connect with us. "I've always known Salman to be a good man, someone I've looked up to and admired and still do. He's always been a hero and always will be.

But yes, it's not heroic to laugh or make fun of a filmmaker just because his box office collections are not up there with yours. Guzaarish is a super success in its own way. And I will be hurt if anyone talks like this about Mr Bhansali. In my opinion a hero never gloats. When you are super successful, it should in fact make you more gracious and loving.

This is the time one should use to turn even enemies into friends...just give love, not laugh at others. By the time I finish this sentence, I have already forgiven his words, because I know deep inside he only has love for me and this must have been just a momentary lapse of judgement. The films Salman does and the way he projects his charitable causes are as much his prerogative as Sanjay's approach to cinema and charity. Why comment on another person's attitude to life?"

Bhansali's friend recalls, "During Khamoshi Sanjay and Salman were involved with the disabled. Sanjay still remembers when he sent a teacher to teach Salman sign language for Khamoshi and the first thing Salman asked her was how to say 'f#*k' in sign language. The mortified girl had fled from the scene. That's the bratty side of Salman which seems to have now gone out of hand."

Says SLB's close friend, "Sanjay has no intention of reviving Bajirao Mastani at this point of time. BIGGEST EVER IN TERMS OF PARTICIPANTS IN HISTORY: COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2010

After a controversy-marred build-up and negative publicity, the Commonwealth Games set a historic landmark of being the biggest-ever in terms of participation with more than 6700 athletes and officials confirming their entries for the event here on Friday.

With just one day left for the opening ceremony, Delhi will now be known to have hosted the biggest Games surpassing participation in Melbourne four years ago which stood at 5766 athletes and officials.

The excitement is also building up as the Queen's baton makes its way through Delhi in its final lap. The baton had reached the Games Village Saturday morning. After much negative publicity, the Games have made history by being the biggest ever in terms of participants.

More than 6700 athletes have confirmed that they will be attending the mega event. Over 5800 foreign delegates have already arrived and many more are expected to come on Saturday. With this Delhi overtakes Melbourne which hosted the Games in 2006, in terms of participation.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit sounded optimistic and made it clear that she was sure about the Games being a success. The 14 day Games will be kicked off with a grand opening ceremony on Sunday evening at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. It will start with a 2-minute clip showcasing India to the world.

The biggest helium balloon ever will be suspended 25 ft above the ground at the ceremony. Musicians from across the country will also perform at the event.

Athletes from 71 nations will participate in the parade. Ace Shooter and Olympic Gold medalist Abhinav Bindra will take an oath as captain of the Indian team.

Finally, the ceremony will close with a song by none other than A R Rahman. The event will be closely guarded. There will also be over 600 volunteers on duty and over 2000 others taking care of cleanliness, transport and spectators.

Delhi Police chief Y S Dadwal advises people of Delhi to plan their movement well since security will be foolproof. He says 41 venues are being protected. Each bus carrying athletes will have two escorts apart from the security inside the vehicle.

"All leaves of Delhi Police personnel have been cancelled since the 15th of September. We have substantially increased security. We have made considerable arrangements for ballistic security too," said the Commissioner of Police.

"Information about all accreditation cards have been passed on to the police in Hindi too. Those who have to use arms have been given good enough training," he added.

Dadwal promises there will be no PCR shortage. "We have a total of 630 PCR vans. We have withdrawn 450 vehicles from various police units for escort duties. We have hired 900 vehicles. There are unmarked vehicles too," he clarified.

Canada beckons Indian students with new education body (Lead)

Toronto, May 26 (IANS) In a bid to woo more Indian students to Canadian universities and colleges, former Canadian foreign minister Pierre Pettigrew launched the Canada India Education Council (CIEC) here.

He will serve as the chairman of the new educational body and noted Indo-Canadian lawyer Kam Rathee will be its chairman.

“I was very committed to Canada-India relations when I was the foreign minister and I will bring the same passion to the Canada India Education Council,” said Pettigrew, who also held many other portfolios in the Canadian cabinet till 2006, in his opening remarks Tuesday.

Since Canada gets less than 4,000 Indian students compared to 40,000 going to Australia and 80,000 to the US, he said, “We should tell Indians that Canada is such a unique country. We should tell that our education system will make them much more knowledgeable individuals.”

Kam Rathee, who as former president of the Canada-India Business Council (C-IBC) has taken many educational delegations to India, said the new body will fill the gap in the education field between the two countries.

“Of late, India has been the flavour of international business community, and this includes us who are in the business of education. Recent events in the field of education in India - the bill to right to education and allow foreign universities to set up campuses - reflect a strong surge at the governmental, public and private sector level,” Rathee told reporters.

At the same time, he said, Canada’s most powerful province Ontario, with Toronto as its capital, has decided “to alleviate its deficit by increasing the number of students coming from India. But what is missing is a bridge between the two countries to make this happen…and the CIEC will be that bridge.”

Rathee said: “‘Brand Canada’ is non-existent in India and the CIEC will endeavour to fix it.”

He said the Canada India Education Council will have a strong “social, legal and physical” presence in both India and Canada to “operate exclusively and strategically within the burgeoning Canada-India education corridor”.

The new body will regularly take education delegations to India and invite Indian educationists to Canada.

Man held at Pakistani airport with wired shoes

Pakistani security officials have arrested a man at Karachi airport after he was found with batteries and electrical circuits hidden in his shoes as he was trying to board a flight, officials said on Monday.

The bearded man, identified as Faiz Mohammad, 30, was about to board a Thai Airways flight to Muscat late on Sunday when the devices were found during a routine security check.

He was not carrying any explosives nor were any other suspicious items found on him or in his luggage, an airport security official said.

Police said they were investigating.

"The suspect has told us that it was nothing but a massager, but we are looking at all possible angles, including terrorist activities," said senior police official Tanveer Alam Odho.

In late 2001, a British Islamist militant, Richard Reid, tried to blow up an airliner over the Atlantic with explosives in his shoes.

Pakistan is at the centre of international worries over Islamist militant bomb plots.

A Pakistan-American was arrested in the United States a week ago over a botched plot to blow up a car-bomb in New York's Times Square. The United States is convinced that Pakistani Taliban militants allied with al Qaeda were behind that.

The man arrested in Karachi had placed two batteries hooked up to wires in cavities cut into the heels of each of his shoes.

The devices could have been used to set off explosives, said the airport security official, who declined to be identified.

Sleep is a major factor in rejuvenating the body and activating the immune system.

In the study, boffins found that people who reach 100 are three times more likely to spend at least 10 hours a night in bed.

The study involved analysis of data from a 2005 Chinese survey. The sample was composed of 15,638 adults aged 65 and older, including 3,927 who were between 90 and 99 and 2,794 who were 100 or older, reports The Daily Express.

Dr Danan Gu, of Portland State University in Oregon, said: “About 65 per cent of the sample overall reported that their sleep quality was good or very good, and the weighted average daily sleep time was about seven-and- a-half hours including naps.

“Surprisingly, the oldest adults aged 100 and above were 70 per cent more likely to report good sleep quality than younger participants aged 65 to 79.

“Participants who were 100 years of age and older were less likely to sleep for five or fewer hours a day but they were almost three times more likely to sleep for 10 hours or more.

“MPublish Posten were 23 per cent more likely than women to report sleeping well.”

Australians warned of terror strikes in markets of Delhi

CANBERRA: Australia has not upgraded its travel advisory on India ahead of October's Commonwealth Games, but has warned tourists to avoid some of the city's shopping areas and markets.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated its travelers' website on Thursday to give information about the new warnings issued by the United States and Canada a day earlier.

The warnings come as thousands of athletes and tourists prepare to travel to New Delhi for the games and only days after bomb blasts rocked Bangalore ahead of the Indian Premier League semifinals.

Two blasts outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the Bangalore Royal Challengers and the Mumbai Indians played Saturday, injured 14 people.

The new Australian warning highlights the dangers posed by crowded areas which foreigners are known to frequent, including six of the city's shopping areas and markets.

``According to these warnings, specific and credible information suggests that markets ... could be targeted by terrorists in the coming days or weeks,'' the department's website states.

``We strongly advise Australians to minimize their presence in market areas of New Delhi.''

Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash, Karol Bagh, Mehrauli and Sarojini Nagar are all believed to be possible targets for terrorist attack in the Indian capital, the website says.

Australia, however, has not upgraded the overall level of advice on India, continuing to urge travelers to exercise a high degree of caution while in the country.

On Tuesday, an organizing committee official said security plans around the games will be ``foolproof'' and potential threats had already been identified and thwarted.

T.S. Darbari, joint director general of the organizing committee of the Commonwealth Games, rejected suggestions competitors' family members and supporters will be at risk outside protection perimeters which will surround games venues.

``Delhi is very, very safe (and) secure, not only for the sports people who are coming but also for their families and for the tourists,'' Darbari said.

He said security precautions for the Oct. 3-14 games were unprecedented.

``I know what the plan is that is being formulated, I can't share the details, but let me tell you it is foolproof,'' he was quoted as saying in Sydney.

Ajmer blast: Hindu outfit responsible?

After the Malegon blasts, the role of the radical Hindu outfit, Abhinav Bharat, resurfaced with the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Friday arresting Devendra Gupta for his involvement in the Ajmer dargah sharif blasts in 2007.

Three people were killed and 30 others injured when explosives kept in a tiffin box went off at the famous sufi shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti on October 11, 2007.

‘‘Investigating agencies have gathered enough evidence to prove that the arrested person also had links with the RSS,’’ said Rajasthan home minister Shanti Dhariwal. Gupta (36), a resident of Bihariganj in Ajmer, was produced in the CJM court in Ajmer on Friday and was remanded in 12-day police custody. ATS sources said Gupta had confessed to his involvement in the Ajmer blasts. Investigations also show that Gupta was in constant touch with Sadhvi Pragya Singh, the alleged mastermind of the Malegaon blasts.

‘‘He has given vital information and will be taken to dargah sharif for spot verifications soon,’’ said an ATS officer. ADG (ATS) Kapil Garg said ATS teams were being rushed to other states and investigations were heading in the right direction.

ATS sources claimed they had evidence that the accused was an active member of RSS and had strong links with the alleged rightwing extremist organization, Abhinav Bharat. Sources said after Sadhvi Pragya was arrested following Malegaon blasts, police scanned all the phone numbers saved on her cellphone. Gupta’s arrest was the result of this lead, sources said.

WSJ: Google TV to be announced in May

Google Inc. is planning to introduce Android-based television software to developers at an event in May, according to people familiar with the matter.

The technology—designed to open set-top boxes, TVs and other devices to more content from the Internet—is attracting interest from partners that include Sony Corp., Intel Corp. and Logitech International SA, which are expected to offer products that support the software, these people said. None have so far discussed the efforts publicly.

Google, of Mountain View, Calif., is currently planning on sharing some details about the technology with more than 3,000 developers expected to attend its Google I/O conference in San Francisco May 19 and 20. One person familiar with the matter cautioned the company could also decide to delay discussing it until the technology is more mature. Google uses the annual conference to showcase a range of technologies of interest to developers.

The decision to address developers suggests that the Internet giant may be hoping to kick-start a race to build applications for its TV platform, much in the same way that Google, Apple Inc. and others have courted developers for smartphones.

The app-store approach has already begun to gain traction among some players in the TV market, too, aided by the advent of TVs, Blu-ray players and other hardware with Internet connections.

But before developers invest in TV apps from Google, they'll want to see significant adoption of the software among hardware makers. Intel, the dominant player in chips for PCs, has been trying for years to play a bigger role in set-top boxes, with its efforts focusing lately around a chip called Atom that is used in low-end laptop PCs called netbooks.

People familiar with the matter said Sony has agreed to use a version of Atom in forthcoming products that include TVs and a set-top box. One of them said that while many of the company's product roadmaps will include Google software based on Android, Sony is not betting exclusively on the technology.

Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Sony is planning to announce devices using the Google software and Intel chips at the Google conference.

Meanwhile, Google is continuing a very limited test of a television search service with Dish Network Corp, according to people familiar with the matter. The service, which uses the new Google technology, allows users to access and search across programming from the Internet as well as Dish's conventional programming, these people said. The test, which began last year, is still limited to a very small number of the company's employees and their families.

Polar Bear Attack in Berlin – Revenge for Global Warming?

A polar bear attacked a woman at Berlin Zoo Friday afternoon after she climbed a fence and jumped into its habitat during feeding time, police said Saturday.

The bear attacks the woman during feeding time.

One adult polar bit her several times after she plunged into the moat, police said.

Zoo workers tossed rescue rings toward the woman to hoist her out and distract polar bears swimming nearby, said Goerg Gebhard, a Berlin police officer.

At one point the woman fell back into the water and was grabbed by a bear before she was eventually hoisted to safety.

"They saved her life," Gebhard told CNN.

The woman was severely injured and was being treated at a hospital, police said.

It's unclear why the woman entered the bear habitat, but police issued her a citation for trespassing.

Berlin Zoo is home to Knut, the first polar bear to be born there in over 30 years. The bear became a huge talking point in Germany when his mother gave birth to him in December 2006.

In the latest alert issued to its citizens the US says, "There are increased indications that terrorists are planning imminent attacks in New Delhi. Terrorists have targeted places in the past where US citizens or Westerners are known to congregate or visit. Markets, such as those located in Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash, Karol Bagh, Mehrauli, and Sarojini Nagar, can be especially attractive targets for terrorist groups".

"If you are in an area where unattended packages are spotted, you should immediately exit the area and report the packages to authorities," the alert adds.

Americans traveling or residing in India are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, remain aware of their surroundings, monitor local news reports, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security.

Dangerous Side Effects of Tea Exposed

Even though previous researches have authenticated about the beneficial aspects of tea, scientists have now pointed out the dangerous side effects it poses.

Scientists have earlier shown that antioxidant properties found in green tea could help prevent coronary artery disease. They had also said that drinking tea could help fight against autoimmune disease - when the immune system attacks itself by mistake.

Some earlier studies have also shown that substances in tea and other foods could help fight cancer.

But in the new study, Rutgers University researchers announced that drinking tea could cause chromosome damage and fetal leukemia, reported the online edition of The Washington Times.

Diet derived compounds are generally regarded as safe, based on their long history of use in the diet or as traditional medicines.

But the phytochemicals, which are compounds in plant-derived foods and found in tea extracts, could have biological activity in the body. It could cause dangerous side effects, said Joshua Lambert, the lead author of the study and a chemist at the university.

His findings reveal that a well-meaning self-remedying public is in danger of overdosing on the compounds, particularly through concentrates and supplements that tout their healing or weight-loss powers, or their lack of caffeine.

One commercial brand of green tea extract, for example, claims to contain more than 700 milligrams of polyphenols, or plant-based antioxidants. A typical cup of green tea provides about 80 milligrams.

Lambert, whose research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, has found an increasing number of human cases of hepatotoxicity, or chemical-induced liver damage, reported in people using tea-based dietary supplements. Research on rats and dogs also found a potential for kidney and intestinal damage.

Though Lambert says further research is needed, some of his findings also suggest that heavy amounts of the compounds could damage human chromosomes, pose harm to pregnant women and increase the risk of leukemia among unborn babies.

He is also concerned about negative interaction between the supplements and common prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs.

Baby's sex determines response to pregnancy stress

Sydney, April 30 (IANS) Baby's sex decides the way it responds to stress during pregnancy and its ability to survive complications, says a study.

Male and female babies show different growth and development patterns following stressors during pregnancy such as disease, cigarette use or psychological stress.

The research is being carried out by the Robinson Institute's Pregnancy and Development Group, based at the Lyell McEwin Hospital and led by Vicki Clifton, associate professor at the University of Adelaide.

'What we have found is that male and female babies will respond to a stress during pregnancy by adjusting their growth patterns differently,' said Clifton.

'The male, when mum is stressed, pretends it's not happening and keeps growing, so he can be as big as he possibly can be.

'The female, in response to mum's stress, will reduce her growth rate a little bit; not too much so she becomes growth restricted, but just dropping a bit below average,' added Clifton.

'When there is another complication in the pregnancy - either a different stress or the same one again - the female will continue to grow on that same pathway and do okay but the male baby doesn't do so well and is at greater risk of pre-term delivery, stopping growing or dying in the uterus.'

Clifton said this sex-specific growth response had been observed in pregnancies complicated by asthma, pre-eclampsia and cigarette use but was also likely to occur in other events such as psychological stress.

She said this sex-specific growth pattern was a result of changes in placental function caused by the stress hormone cortisol, said an Adelaide University release.

In female babies, increased cortisol produces changes to the placental function which lead to the reduction in growth, but the increased cortisol levels in a mother carrying a male baby doesn't produce the same changes in placental function.

Clifton said this research could lead to sex-specific therapies in pre-term pregnancies and premature newborns. It was also important in helping obstetricians more accurately interpret growth and development of the foetus in at-risk pregnancies.

Who might be considered eligible for US green cards

To attract the world's "best and the brightest", a group of top Democratic Senators on Friday proposed immediate green cards for foreigners with advanced degrees from American institutes and job offers, a good news for India which sends a large number of students to the US.

At the same time, they have proposed tightening of rules for H-1B and L1 visas, which are also most popular among Indian technology professionals.

The proposals being put forward by a coalition of powerful Democratic Senators are aimed at fixing the country's broken immigration system.

President Barack Obama has also called for a comprehensive immigration reform and identified this as one of his top priorities.

The proposals "will reform America's high-skilled immigration system to permanently attract the world's best and brightest while preventing the loss of American jobs to temporary foreign labour contractors," said a report drawn by Senators Charles E Schumer, Harry Reid and Bob Menendez.

At the moment, high-skilled workers are prevented from emigrating to the US due to restrictive caps on their entry, says the 26-page conceptual proposal for immigration reform.

"In order to accomplish this goal, a Green Card (permanent residency) will be immediately available to foreign students with an advanced degree from a United States institution of higher education in a field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, and who possess an offer of employment from a United States employer in a field related to their degree," it says.

Given that India is among the countries sending maximum number of higher studies students in the field of science, mathematics, engineering and technology to the US; it is expected to benefit the most.

Under the current system, Indian have to wait for several years - some time even around a decade - to get the coveted Green Card, which is a step short of citizenship.
"Foreign students will be permitted to enter the United States with immigrant intent if they are a bona fide student so long as they pursue a full course of study at an institution of higher education in a field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics," the proposal said.

"To address the fact that workers from some countries face unreasonably long backlogs that have no responsiveness to America's economic needs, this proposal eliminates the per-country employment immigration caps," it said.

At the same time, the Senators proposed tightening of the rules for H-1B and L1 visas.

Pakistan and India resume talks halted by Mumbai attacks

The prime ministers of India and Pakistan agreed today to resume peace talks between their top diplomats and work toward rebuilding trust shattered by the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that New Delhi blamed on Pakistani militants.

Officials said India's Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart, Yousuf Raza Gilani, agreed on the need to normalise relations dogged by more than six decades of hostility since both gained independence from Britain. They deputed their foreign ministers to meet at a later date to discuss the resumption of a wide-ranging formal dialogue that began in 2004, but was suspended after the Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.

The two prime ministers met for more than an hour in the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, on the sidelines of a summit of south Asian leaders. It was their first meeting in eight months.

India's foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, said Gilani assured India that Pakistan would not allow its territory to be used for terrorist activity directed against India and it would expedite the trial of suspects of the Mumbai attacks it is holding in Pakistan.

The two prime ministers "agreed that relations between the two countries should be normalised and the channels of contact should work effectively to enlarge the constituency of peace in both countries," Rao told reporters.

Pakistan's foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, described it as a "very friendly" meeting and signalled that he thought the resumption of the dialogue – which covers a range of issues from border disputes, nuclear weapons and the two countries' dispute over Kashmir – was a formality.

"The two prime ministers have agreed to resume a dialogue process that remained suspended for so many months. Both foreign ministers have been asked to work out modalities of engagement. The climate has changed," Qureshi said.

"I don't think that either side was expecting such a positive turn in dialogue."

Rao was more equivocal. She said India was willing to discuss and resolve all outstanding issues with Pakistan – including terrorism and the rise in infiltration by Islamic insurgents. She said the foreign ministers have been charged with "thinking afresh and working out ways to restore trust and confidence in the relationship." No date has been set for the meeting.

India and Pakistan have been under pressure to resume their peace dialogue – which eased historic tensions although it made little headway on the key issue of Kashmir, which they both claim in entirety and have fought two of their three wars over since gaining independence in 1947.

The US hopes that if tensions on the subcontinent ease, Pakistan will be able to deploy resources on the Indian border to help fight the Taliban and al-Qaida on its border with Afghanistan.

Pakistan is trying seven men on charges related to the Mumbai attacks, but the militant network blamed for the assault continues to operate relatively freely.

Oil slick to hit US coast 'within hours'

The United States mobilised its military tonight in an attempt to help deal with the vast oil slick spreading across the Gulf of Mexico amid predictions that it will begin to hit the Louisiana coast within hours and could cause one of the country's biggest environmental disasters.

The US coastguard said today that oil was flowing into the sea at five times the rate previously estimated.

The government has taken broad control of efforts to contain the spill from last week's blowout on the Deepwater Horizon rig, with the White House saying it had imposed "oversight" of BP's efforts and is pursuing an "aggressive" response that includes mobilising naval ships.

Louisiana has declared a state of emergency and the White House said the president, Barack Obama, and the joint chiefs of staff were being briefed regularly on the situation. Tonight, Obama said the British company was "ultimately responsible" for the spill.

The reassessment of the scale of the disaster, which came after a third leak was discovered, sent BP's share price plunging, with more than £13bn knocked off the company's market value since the explosion.

Under US law, the company is responsible for the costs of dealing with the crisis, including paying for use of the military.

Environmentalists warned that the spill, which covers an area about the size of Cornwall and is just a few miles off the Mississippi river delta, could turn out to be as catastrophic as the impact of the Exxon Valdez tanker spill off Alaska was 21 years ago.

The most immediate threat is to birds, dolphins and turtles in the area and to the Louisiana coast, as strengthening winds push the slick toward the shore.
